What it does

The Instant Asset Write-Off Calculator checks whether a business asset qualifies for an immediate deduction under the ATO small business rules and shows the year 1 tax saving compared with depreciating it.

The formula

Year 1 deduction = GST-exclusive cost x business use % x number of assets (if the cost is under the threshold and turnover is under the cap); Tax saving = deduction x tax rate

How it works

It tests the GST-exclusive cost of the asset against the instant asset write-off threshold and your aggregated turnover against the small business cap, applies your business-use percentage, then values the deduction at your company rate or your individual marginal rate plus the Medicare levy.

Where it is used

  • Checking whether an asset is under the write-off threshold
  • Sizing the year 1 tax saving before buying
  • Comparing an immediate write-off with depreciation

Worked example

An asset invoiced at A$18,700.00 is … excluding GST, so it clears the threshold with … to spare. The year 1 deduction is … and the tax saving …, leaving a net cost of ….

What the instant asset write off calculator does

The instant asset write off calculator tells you whether a business asset you are about to buy can be deducted in full in the year you first use it, and what that deduction is worth after tax. It runs the two eligibility gates the ATO applies, adjusts for GST registration and business-use percentage, and then compares the immediate deduction against the slower alternative of depreciating the asset over several income years.

The result is the number that actually matters at the point of purchase: how much of the invoice you get back through the tax system in the first year, and what the asset really costs you once the GST credit and the tax saving are taken off.

The two eligibility tests

There are only two gates, and an asset has to clear both.

  • The cost test. The asset must cost less than the write-off threshold. This is a per-asset test, applied to each item separately, not to the total spent for the year.
  • The turnover test. The business must have aggregated annual turnover below the small business cap. Aggregated turnover includes the turnover of connected entities and affiliates, not just the entity making the purchase.

Both figures come from the parameter layer rather than being written into the calculator, so the tool reflects the current legislated amounts. From 1 July 2026 the write-off is a permanent part of the small business depreciation rules. Earlier commentary describing the concession as temporary, or as reverting to a $1,000 threshold at the end of an income year, is out of date.

Why GST registration changes the answer

The cost that matters for the threshold is the cost you actually bear.

If your business is registered for GST and the asset is used for a creditable purpose, you claim the GST back as an input tax credit. The GST never becomes part of the cost of the asset, so both the threshold test and the deduction use the GST-exclusive figure. An asset invoiced at $21,780 is $19,800 excluding GST, which clears a $20,000 threshold even though the invoice does not.

If you are not registered, there is no credit to claim. The GST stays in the cost base, the full invoiced amount is tested, and the same asset would fail.

The calculator applies whichever treatment matches your registration status, and shows the GST credit separately so you can see the two effects independently.

Business use versus the threshold test

A common misreading is that private use scales down the asset for the threshold test. It does not.

The whole cost of the asset is tested against the threshold. What business use changes is the size of the deduction. A ute costing $18,000 excluding GST and used 70 per cent for business is tested as an $18,000 asset, and if it qualifies the deduction is $12,600. The private portion is simply not deductible, in this or any later year.

Get the business-use percentage from a genuine record, such as a logbook for a vehicle or a usage diary for a laptop or a tool. An estimate typed into a calculator is a planning figure, not evidence.

Writing off now versus depreciating

The instant asset write off does not create a deduction that would otherwise never exist. Over the life of the asset you deduct the same total either way. What changes is the timing, and timing is worth real money to a business managing cash.

The calculator shows both paths side by side:

  • Immediate write-off. The full business-use cost is deducted in the year the asset is first used or installed ready for use.
  • Depreciation instead. Only a first-year slice is deducted, with the rest carried into later years.

The difference between the two tax savings is the year 1 cash-flow advantage. That is the number to weigh against the cost of bringing a purchase forward: the interest on the finance, the risk of buying equipment you do not yet need, and the fact that a deduction is only ever worth a fraction of what you spend.

The first-year rate used for the depreciation comparison is an input rather than a fixed constant, because the rate that applies to you depends on whether you use the simplified pool, the general depreciation rules, or an effective life determination for that asset class.

What the deduction is worth

A deduction reduces taxable income, so its value is the deduction multiplied by the rate that income would otherwise have been taxed at.

For a company that is the company tax rate, which differs between a base rate entity and a standard-rate company. For a sole trader or partner it is the marginal rate on the income the deduction displaces, plus the Medicare levy, because reducing taxable income reduces the levy base as well. That is why the calculator asks for your taxable income before the deduction rather than assuming a rate.

The practical consequence is that the same asset is worth more to a high-income sole trader than to a company on the base rate. It is also why a deduction that pushes you down into a lower bracket is worth less at the margin than the headline rate suggests.

Timing rules that catch people out

Three timing points decide which income year the deduction lands in.

  1. The asset must be first used, or installed ready for use, for a taxable purpose within the income year. Ordering and paying for it is not enough.
  2. The financial year runs 1 July to 30 June, so a purchase on 28 June and a purchase on 2 July fall into different returns.
  3. Second-hand assets are eligible under the small business rules, provided they meet the same cost and turnover tests.

Reading your result

Work through the outputs in this order. Check the GST-exclusive cost and the headroom under the threshold first; if the headroom is negative the asset does not qualify and everything below it is the depreciation path. Then look at the year 1 deduction and the tax saving, and finally at the net cost after the GST credit and the tax saving, which is the true cost of the asset to the business.

If the headroom is only a few hundred dollars, be careful with delivery, installation and accessory charges. Costs that form part of the cost of the asset count towards the threshold, and a delivery fee can push an otherwise qualifying asset over the line.

This calculator produces an estimate for planning purposes based on the figures you enter and the current ATO parameters. It is not tax advice, and it does not consider your full circumstances. Check the position for your entity with a registered tax agent or the ATO before you commit to a purchase.

Frequently asked questions

What is the instant asset write off threshold now?
The threshold is a per-asset limit on the cost of a depreciating asset. It is applied by this calculator from the current ATO figure held in the parameter layer, and it was legislated as a permanent feature from 1 July 2026 rather than an annual extension.
Does the threshold apply per asset or per year?
Per asset. A business can write off several assets in the same income year as long as each one costs less than the threshold on its own. There is no annual cap on the number of qualifying assets.
Is the cost tested including or excluding GST?
If you are registered for GST and can claim the credit, the asset is tested on its GST-exclusive cost. If you are not registered, the GST forms part of the cost and the full invoiced amount is tested.
What happens if the asset costs more than the threshold?
It cannot be written off immediately. It goes into the small business simplified depreciation pool or is depreciated under the general rules, so the deduction is spread over several income years instead of one.
Does private use reduce the deduction?
Yes. Only the business-use share is deductible. A vehicle used 70 per cent for business gives a deduction of 70 per cent of the asset cost, even though the whole asset can still be tested against the threshold.
How much tax does the deduction actually save?
The saving is the deduction multiplied by the rate that applies to the entity. A company saves at its company rate; a sole trader saves at their marginal rate plus the Medicare levy, because the deduction reduces the levy base too.
How should I read the result?
Work through the outputs in this order. Check the GST-exclusive cost and the headroom under the threshold first; if the headroom is negative the asset does not qualify and everything below it is the depreciation path.

That is the editorial standard of the site as well as his habit. Every rate, threshold and bracket here carries the document it was read from and the date it takes effect, and gets re-checked when the law moves rather than when someone happens to notice.
