Free calculators for UK benefits and support

The benefits system mixes very different kinds of support: disability benefits assessed on points or care needs, means-tested help that tapers away as earnings rise, flat payments linked to a life event, and government top-ups on money you pay in yourself. These UK benefit calculators cover eight of them and turn the rules into figures you can plan with, showing the weekly, monthly or annual amount and the reasoning that produced it.

Every calculator runs in your browser and is free to use, with no sign-up. Nothing you enter is uploaded, stored or shared, so you can check personal details such as income, care needs or the date of a bereavement in private.

Disability and care

The PIP calculator converts daily living and mobility points into Personal Independence Payment. Each component is scored and awarded separately at a standard or enhanced rate, and the calculator shows the weekly total, the payment every four weeks, the annual value and how many more points each component would need to reach the next rate, which is a useful figure before a reconsideration or an appeal. The Attendance Allowance calculator does a similar job for people over State Pension age, where the rate depends on whether help is needed by day, by night or both, or under the special rules for terminal illness. It also measures the benefit against what you spend on care each week, so the shortfall you fund yourself becomes a number rather than a feeling. Neither benefit is means-tested or taxable, and both can unlock extra help elsewhere, from Pension Credit to a carer’s claim.

Work, rent and Universal Credit

The better off in work calculator compares a household’s income out of work with its income at a chosen number of hours and hourly rate. It applies Income Tax, National Insurance, the work allowance and the Universal Credit earnings taper, then subtracts the extra costs of working such as travel and childcare, so you see the real monthly gain rather than the headline wage. Its effective deduction rate explains why an extra hour can be worth less than it looks.

The Housing Benefit and LHA calculator separates the two gaps renters face. The Local Housing Allowance rate for your area and bedroom category caps the rent the system will consider, and anything above it is a shortfall no award covers; the tool then works out how much of the eligible rent your award meets once earnings and any non-dependant deduction reduce it. For most working-age renters this support now comes as the Universal Credit housing element, while pension-age claimants stay on Housing Benefit, and the cap works the same way for both.

Family and life events

The Maternity Allowance calculator is for people who cannot get Statutory Maternity Pay, such as the self-employed, recent job changers and agency workers. It works out the weekly amount as the lower of the standard rate and a share of your average earnings, the weeks payable and the total, and it also shows the earnings you forgo during the leave. The Tax-Free Childcare calculator shows the government top-up on a childcare account, what you still pay each month and how much top-up a large bill loses to the quarterly cap per child, along with the earnings test each parent must meet.

The Bereavement Support Payment calculator sets out the first payment and the monthly instalments after a partner dies, at the higher rate where there are dependent children and the standard rate otherwise. It also puts a figure on the cost of claiming late, because instalments can only be backdated a limited number of months and the first payment is lost entirely once its own deadline passes.

Pensioners and winter costs

The Winter Fuel Payment calculator works out the household amount, splits it between two qualifying people, and tests each person’s taxable income against the recovery limit. Recovery is all or nothing, so a pound of income over the limit costs that person’s whole share while a partner below it keeps theirs. The headroom figure shows how much more income you could take before your share is recovered, which helps with decisions about pension drawdown and with whether to opt out. Scotland and Northern Ireland run their own schemes.

Why estimate before you claim or change

Many of these entitlements hinge on timing or on a single line. A late bereavement claim can lose money that can never be recovered, a pay rise that crosses the tax and National Insurance thresholds keeps far less of each extra pound once the Universal Credit taper is added, a bonus can take a parent over the Tax-Free Childcare income ceiling, and an extra pension withdrawal can cost a Winter Fuel Payment. Running a scenario first shows the effect before it happens and points to the next step, whether that is claiming today, adjusting hours or asking the council about a Discretionary Housing Payment.

Benefit rates are uprated each April, and the calculators hold them as parameters for 2026/27 rather than writing them into the pages. The results are estimates for planning, not an award decision: entitlement depends on your full circumstances and the evidence you provide, so confirm your position with the Department for Work and Pensions, HMRC, your local council or an adviser such as Citizens Advice.

Getting the most from the tools

  • Describe your care needs as they really are; people often understate the help they need at night.
  • Look up the Local Housing Allowance rate for your postcode and bedroom category before using the housing tool.
  • Put a realistic figure on the extra costs of working, because they can wipe out a gain.
  • Check a partner’s income as well as your own where a test is individual, as it is for the Winter Fuel Payment.
