The formula

Virginia tax = sum of (taxable income in each bracket × rate); after-tax = income − Virginia tax

How it works

It subtracts the Virginia standard deduction from your Virginia adjusted gross income, then applies Virginia's four progressive brackets to the remainder.

Where it is used

  • Seeing your effective and marginal Virginia rate
  • Checking Virginia take-home income

Worked example

What the Virginia income tax calculator does

The calculator estimates the income tax you owe to the Commonwealth of Virginia and your income after it. It starts from your Virginia adjusted gross income, subtracts the Virginia standard deduction for your filing status, and applies Virginia's progressive brackets to the rest. Virginia's brackets and deduction rules differ from the federal ones, so this gives you the state part of your tax bill on its own.

How Virginia's tax brackets work

Virginia has four rates: 2 percent on the lowest slice of taxable income, 3 percent on the next, 5 percent on the following slice, and 5.75 percent on everything above the top threshold. Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, so crossing into a higher bracket never reduces your take-home pay.

Virginia applies the same bracket schedule to single filers and married couples filing jointly, so in this calculator the two statuses differ mainly through the standard deduction. The top rate starts at a fairly low income, so most working Virginians reach it, and their effective rate sits close to but below 5.75 percent.

The Virginia standard deduction

The standard deduction is subtracted before the brackets apply. The married-filing-jointly amount is roughly double the single amount. Virginia has raised its standard deduction in recent years, and the figures here are stored as parameters and updated when they change. If you itemize on your Virginia return, your taxable income may differ from this estimate.

Virginia additions and subtractions

Virginia taxable income does not always match your federal figure. Virginia requires some additions, such as items it taxes but the federal system does not, and allows subtractions, such as certain retirement income, Social Security benefits Virginia exempts, and age-based deductions for older taxpayers. Enter these in the advanced fields to bring the estimate closer to your actual return. Left at zero, the calculator treats your income as your Virginia base before the standard deduction.

Reading your result

The results show your Virginia tax, the taxable income the brackets were applied to, your effective state rate (tax as a share of income), your marginal state rate (the bracket of your last dollar), and your after-tax income annually and monthly. For most filers the marginal rate is 5.75 percent, while the effective rate is lower because the first slices are taxed at lower rates. Only additional income is taxed at the marginal rate.

Enter your expected annual income, not a single paycheck scaled up, since the brackets apply to the full year. A two-earner household filing jointly combines both incomes against the joint standard deduction. The calculator can also help if you are considering a move to or from Virginia. Virginia adjusts its standard deduction from time to time and can change its brackets by law, so recalculate when your income, filing status or Virginia adjustments change.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Virginia income tax calculator do?
It estimates the Virginia state income tax on your Virginia taxable income based on your filing status, then shows your after-tax income and your effective and marginal state rates.
What are Virginia's income tax brackets?
Virginia uses four progressive brackets. The first $3,000 is taxed at 2 percent, the next 2,000 at 3 percent, the next 12,000 at 5 percent, and income above $17,000 at 5.75 percent. The same schedule applies to single and married-joint filers.
Does Virginia have a standard deduction?
Yes. Virginia offers a standard deduction that reduces your taxable income before the brackets are applied. The married-filing-jointly amount is roughly double the single amount, and the figures are stored as parameters and updated when they change.
Is federal tax included in this estimate?
No. This tool estimates only Virginia state income tax. Federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare are separate and are handled by other calculators.
What income figure should I enter?
Enter your Virginia adjusted gross income, which usually starts from your federal AGI. You can then add Virginia additions and subtract Virginia subtractions using the advanced fields to refine the estimate.
Is my data private?
Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded, stored, or shared.

He is an economics student, and his work here is comparative by design. A pension deferral bonus in Quebec, a commuting allowance in Germany, a rent-increase ceiling in the Netherlands: each is a decision a government made about how money should move, and each reads differently once you set it beside eight others. He builds and checks these calculators across nine markets from primary sources — the regulation rather than a summary of it, the ministry’s own circular rather than a news item quoting it.

That is the editorial standard of the site as well as his habit. Every rate, threshold and bracket here carries the document it was read from and the date it takes effect, and gets re-checked when the law moves rather than when someone happens to notice.
