The formula

State tax = flat rate x taxable income + surtax rate x (taxable income over threshold)

How it works

It applies the Massachusetts flat rate to your taxable income, then adds the 4% surtax on any taxable income above the surtax threshold.

Where it is used

  • Estimating Massachusetts state income tax
  • Checking the impact of the millionaire surtax
  • Checking take-home income in Massachusetts

Worked example

On $100,000.00 of taxable income, Massachusetts tax is …, leaving … at an effective rate of ….

What the Massachusetts income tax calculator does

The calculator estimates the Massachusetts income tax you owe and the income you keep after it. Unlike most states, Massachusetts taxes most income at one flat rate, and a voter-approved surtax adds an extra charge on income above a high threshold. The tool combines both and shows the flat tax and the surtax separately.

How the flat rate works

The state charges the same rate on essentially all taxable income, so the main part of the bill is your taxable income times the flat rate. For residents well below the surtax threshold, that is the whole calculation, and the effective rate on taxable income equals the flat rate.

The millionaire surtax

The surtax applies only to taxable income above a threshold of roughly one million dollars, indexed each year, and only to the part above it. Someone just over the threshold pays the extra rate on the small slice above it, while the rest is taxed at the flat rate alone.

For high earners, income up to the threshold is taxed at the flat rate and income beyond it at the flat rate plus the surtax. The calculator shows how much of your bill comes from the surtax, which is useful in a year when income approaches or crosses the threshold.

How the calculation works

  • It subtracts the deductions and exemptions you enter from your gross income to find taxable income.
  • It multiplies taxable income by the flat rate for the base tax.
  • If taxable income is above the surtax threshold, it applies the surtax rate to the excess.
  • It adds the base tax and the surtax for your total Massachusetts tax and subtracts that from gross income for your after-tax figure.

The output shows the flat tax and the surtax with your taxable income, effective rate and monthly take-home.

Deductions, exemptions, and taxable income

Massachusetts tax is based on taxable income, not gross pay. Personal exemptions and certain deductions reduce the income subject to tax, and so reduce your bill directly. Enter your combined deductions and exemptions as you expect to claim them. Massachusetts has its own rules on which items qualify, so confirm the details with a tax professional if you are unsure.

What you need to enter

  • Your gross annual income.
  • The deductions and exemptions you plan to claim.

If your income varies through the year, enter your expected annual total, since the flat rate and the surtax threshold apply to full-year taxable income. A one-time spike such as a large bonus or the sale of a business or property can push taxable income over the threshold for that year, so model it separately.

Reading your result

The output shows your total Massachusetts tax, split into the flat tax and any surtax, and your after-tax income. For most residents the surtax line is zero. For high earners it shows how much the extra rate adds and how the effective rate rises above the threshold.

The estimate covers Massachusetts income tax only. Federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and any credits you qualify for also affect what you take home.

When to use this tool

  • Estimate your Massachusetts state income tax.
  • See whether the millionaire surtax affects you and by how much.
  • Check how deductions and exemptions change your bill.
  • Plan a budget around a realistic Massachusetts net income.

The flat rate, surtax rate and threshold can change, so recalculate each year and whenever your income or deductions change.

Frequently asked questions

What does this Massachusetts income tax calculator do?
It applies the state's flat rate to your taxable income, adds the 4% surtax on any taxable income above the millionaire threshold, and shows your after-tax income.
How is Massachusetts income tax structured?
Massachusetts taxes most income at a single flat rate instead of graduated brackets. A voter-approved surtax adds an extra rate on taxable income above a high threshold, so very high earners pay two rates.
What is the millionaire surtax?
An additional tax on the part of taxable income above roughly one million dollars, with the threshold indexed each year. Only the income above the threshold pays the extra rate.
How do deductions and exemptions factor in?
Enter the deductions and personal exemptions you expect to claim. The calculator subtracts them from gross income to find the taxable income that the flat rate and the surtax apply to.
Does this include federal tax or FICA?
No. This tool covers Massachusetts state income tax only. Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare are not included.
Are the figures current?
The flat rate, surtax rate and surtax threshold are maintained from official Massachusetts sources and updated when they change.

A pension deferral bonus in Quebec, a commuting allowance in Germany, a rent-increase ceiling in the Netherlands: each is a decision a government made about how money should move, and each reads differently once you set it beside eight others. He builds and checks these calculators across nine markets from primary sources — the regulation rather than a summary of it, the ministry’s own circular rather than a news item quoting it.

That is the editorial standard of the site as well as his habit. Every rate, threshold and bracket here carries the document it was read from and the date it takes effect, and gets re-checked when the law moves rather than when someone happens to notice.
