Multi-Currency Bill Split Calculator
This multi currency bill split calculator divides a shared bill among any number of people and converts each share into a second currency at your own rate.

What it does
The Multi-Currency Bill Split Calculator divides a shared cost among a group and converts each share into a second currency at the exchange rate you enter. It is built for travellers, expats and anyone settling a bill that was charged in a currency different from the one their friends pay in.
Data sources & parameters
This calculator uses standard financial formulas and runs entirely in your browser. It needs no external rate data — your result is computed only from the values you enter above.
We always strive to use the latest data for every variable so our results and reports are as accurate as possible. Even so, errors are possible — you should not rely on this tool or its report alone, and we accept no liability for any decision made based on it.
The formula
per_person_base = total_amount ÷ number_of_people; per_person_converted = per_person_base × exchange_rate; total_converted = total_amount × exchange_rate
How it works
You enter the total amount, how many people are sharing it and the exchange rate between the two currencies. The tool divides the total by the number of people to get each person's base share, then multiplies both that share and the full total by the exchange rate to show the converted amounts.
Where it is used
- Splitting a restaurant or hotel bill charged abroad
- Working out what each friend owes in their home currency
- Checking the converted total before paying a group invoice
Worked example
A group of four shares a $1,200.00 bill at an exchange rate of 1.1. Each person's base share is …, which converts to …, and the full bill converts to ….
What the multi-currency bill split calculator does
The multi-currency bill split calculator handles a bill charged in one currency when the people sharing it pay in another. It divides the cost equally among the group and converts each share into a second currency at the exchange rate you provide, so you know both the base share and the converted amount.
It is useful after a group dinner abroad, for a shared holiday rental booked in a foreign currency, or for a joint purchase where one person paid the merchant and everyone else needs to settle up at home.
How the calculation works
The total amount is divided by the number of people to give the base share, what each person owes in the currency the bill was charged in. That base share is multiplied by the exchange rate to give the converted share, the amount each person pays in their own currency. The full total is multiplied by the same rate to give the converted total, useful when one person needs to reimburse the payer in the second currency.
All three figures come from the same rate, so they stay consistent: the converted shares add up to the converted total, give or take a rounding cent on large groups.
The three inputs
- The total amount is the full bill as charged, in the original currency. Enter it exactly as it appears, before any tip or fee you want to handle separately.
- The number of people is how many ways the bill is split. The tool assumes an equal split.
- The exchange rate is the number of units of the second currency you get for one unit of the first.
Choosing the exchange rate
The tool uses whatever rate you enter, so this is the most important choice. The mid-market rate quoted by major currency websites is the fairest reference when friends want to settle between themselves. If the bill will be paid with a specific card, the rate on that card's statement is more realistic, because it already reflects the provider's pricing. If a bank or app adds a foreign-transaction fee, raise the rate slightly to include it, so the converted figure matches what will leave the account.
Use the same rate for everyone in the group.
Where it helps
On a group holiday it settles the villa or hotel bill so each traveller pays a fair share in their home currency. At a restaurant abroad it turns the local total into amounts your friends can transfer later. For online group purchases where a store charges in its own currency, it tells each person what to send. Expats and cross-border families who regularly move money between two currencies can use it to divide shared costs, with any currency pair.
Reading the results
The per-person base share is what each of you owes in the original currency. The per-person converted share is what each of you should pay or transfer. The converted total is what one person would pay to settle the whole bill in the second currency.
The figures are only as accurate as the rate you entered. Each amount is rounded to two decimal places, so on very large groups the individual shares can add up to a cent or two more or less than the converted total.
Settling fairly
Agree on the exchange rate before anyone pays, so there is no dispute later. Decide in advance how tips, service charges, or delivery fees are handled, and either include them in the total or leave them out consistently. If the group's shares are uneven, use the per-person figures as a reference and adjust individual amounts by hand.
