What it does

The formula

This year = min(18% x prior income, dollar cap) - pension adjustment; total = this year + carry-forward

How it works

This year's room is 18% of prior-year earned income, capped at the annual dollar limit, minus any pension adjustment. Adding your carried-forward room gives your total available room.

Where it is used

  • Estimating annual RRSP room
  • Accounting for an employer pension adjustment
  • Adding carried-forward room from past years

Worked example

On CA$80,000.00 of prior-year income, this year's room is …, giving total contribution room of ….

What the RRSP contribution room calculator does

An RRSP gives you a deduction for contributing, but only up to a limit personal to you. The calculator estimates that limit from your prior-year earned income, the statutory rate and dollar cap, any pension adjustment and any room carried forward. Contributing within your room secures the deduction; going beyond it can bring a penalty.

How this year’s room is built

New room is the lesser of 18% of last year’s earned income and the annual dollar limit, $33,810 for 2026. For most people the 18% applies; for high earners the cap takes over. On $80,000 of prior-year income, 18% is $14,400, well below the cap. On $250,000, 18% would be $45,000, so the room is the $33,810 cap.

The pension adjustment

If you are in a workplace pension or deferred profit-sharing plan, the value of the benefit you earned last year, your pension adjustment, is subtracted from your RRSP room. Someone with a generous defined-benefit pension can have very little RRSP room left, which is expected.

Carry-forward room

RRSP room does not expire. Unused room carries forward and adds to future years, so people who have not contributed for a while often have a lot banked. The calculator adds your carried-forward figure to this year’s room.

A worked example

With $80,000 of prior-year earned income, new room is $14,400. A $4,000 pension adjustment reduces it to $10,400, and $6,000 of carried-forward room brings the total to $16,400. The same income can give very different room depending on the pension adjustment and carry-forward, which is why the calculator asks for all three.

Is contribution room the same across provinces?

Yes. Room is set by federal rules, so the rate, cap and carry-forward work the same everywhere. Your province affects how much tax a deduction saves, not the room itself. Quebec residents claim the deduction on their provincial return as well, against the same federal room, and pension adjustments reduce room in every province.

Reading the estimate sensibly

Only certain kinds of income count as earned income for RRSP purposes, so use that figure rather than total income. Past over-contributions, Home Buyers’ Plan or Lifelong Learning Plan activity and earlier pension adjustments all feed into your official limit, so confirm the exact number before a large contribution.

When to use it

  • Before contributing, to confirm you have room.
  • At tax time, to plan a contribution that reduces this year’s taxable income.
  • If you have a workplace pension, to see how the pension adjustment affects your room.
  • After years without contributing, to gauge your carried-forward room.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Contributing beyond your room. Once you exceed the $2,000 buffer, the excess is charged 1% for every month it stays in the plan.
  • Using total income instead of earned income, which overstates room.
  • Forgetting to subtract the pension adjustment.

Confirming your room

Your exact deduction limit is on your latest notice of assessment and in CRA My Account. Your pension adjustment is in box 52 of your T4, and contributions are claimed on Schedule 7 with your return. The rate and dollar limit are set by the government and can change; the calculator uses maintained figures.

Frequently asked questions

What does the RRSP contribution room calculator work out?
How much you can contribute to your RRSP and deduct this year: this year's new room, based on your prior-year earned income, plus unused room carried forward, less any employer pension adjustment.
How is this year's RRSP room calculated?
It is 18% of your prior-year earned income, up to an annual dollar limit, $33,810 for 2026. If 18% of your income would exceed that cap, the cap applies instead.
What is a pension adjustment and why does it reduce my room?
If you belong to an employer pension or deferred profit-sharing plan, the value of the benefits you earned is reported as a pension adjustment. You are already building tax-assisted retirement savings through that plan, so it is subtracted from your RRSP room.
Does unused RRSP room carry forward?
Yes. Room you do not use carries forward to later years, and you can add the carried-forward amount so the total reflects this year's room and what you have banked.
How accurate is the estimate?
The calculator applies the current rate and dollar cap exactly, so it is a strong estimate. Your exact deduction limit is on your latest notice of assessment, which reflects your full history, including pension adjustments and any past over-contributions.
Is my data private?
Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded, stored or shared.

He is an economics student, and his work here is comparative by design. A pension deferral bonus in Quebec, a commuting allowance in Germany, a rent-increase ceiling in the Netherlands: each is a decision a government made about how money should move, and each reads differently once you set it beside eight others. He builds and checks these calculators across nine markets from primary sources — the regulation rather than a summary of it, the ministry’s own circular rather than a news item quoting it.

That is the editorial standard of the site as well as his habit. Every rate, threshold and bracket here carries the document it was read from and the date it takes effect, and gets re-checked when the law moves rather than when someone happens to notice.
