The formula
Weekly = hourly minimum wage x hours; Annual = weekly x 52; Monthly = annual / 12
How it works
It reads the current general minimum wage for your province, then multiplies by your weekly hours for a weekly figure, by 52 for an annual figure, and divides that by 12 for a monthly figure.
Where it is used
- Checking the minimum wage where you live
- Estimating minimum-wage earnings at your hours
- Comparing minimum-wage pay across provinces
Worked example
At the Ontario minimum wage of … an hour for 40 hours a week, weekly pay is … and annual pay ….
Canada has no single national minimum wage for most workers, so the rate you are entitled to depends on where you work, and the gap between provinces is wide. This calculator shows the general adult minimum wage in each province and territory and the weekly, monthly and annual pay it produces for your hours.
What the minimum wage calculator does
Choose your province and enter your usual weekly hours. The tool reads the current general adult minimum wage and shows your hourly rate, weekly, monthly and annual pay. Weekly pay is the rate times your hours; annual pay is weekly pay times 52; monthly pay is annual pay divided by 12. Special rates for students, liquor servers or particular industries are not applied.
A worked example
Ontario’s general minimum wage is $17.95 an hour from October 1, 2026. At 40 hours a week that is $718 a week, $37,336 a year and about $3,111.33 a month. At 20 hours a week it is exactly half: $359 a week, $18,668 a year and about $1,555.67 a month.
In Quebec at $16.60 an hour and 35 hours a week, weekly pay is $581 and annual pay $30,212. The bar chart lines up the weekly, monthly and annual figures.
Why the province matters so much
Minimum wage is a provincial and territorial responsibility. Alberta, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick are near the bottom, at $15.00 to $15.90 an hour; British Columbia, Yukon and Nunavut are at the top, from $18.25 to $20.17. Over a full year at 40 hours a week, the gap between the lowest and highest rates is more than $10,000.
Several provinces now index their rate to the Consumer Price Index so it rises automatically each year; others change it only when the government decides to. That is why the ranking shifts over time, and why comparisons should use current figures.
Workers in federally regulated sectors, such as banking, interprovincial transport and telecommunications, are covered by the federal minimum wage instead; where the provincial rate is higher, the higher rate applies. Federally regulated workers should check which rate governs their job.
Using the result
Landlords and lenders often think in monthly income, employers in annual salary, and workers in hourly rates, so having all three helps. When comparing a move between provinces, compare the annual figures and allow for cost of living. These are gross figures: income tax, CPP and EI still come off, although at low incomes the basic personal amounts shelter much of it from income tax. A take-home pay calculator gives the net figure.
Common mistakes when estimating minimum-wage pay
- Confusing gross with net pay.
- Assuming 40 hours is standard; full-time is often 37.5 or 35 hours.
- Using last year’s rate after a scheduled increase.
- Ignoring special rates for students, servers or some sectors.
The enforceable amount comes from your province’s employment standards rules. If a pay stub does not match the legislated minimum, raise it with your employer or the provincial labour authority.
Assumptions and limits
The calculator uses the current general adult minimum wage for each province from maintained data, a 52-week year and steady weekly hours. It does not apply student, server or sector rates, overtime premiums or deductions, and it does not account for a rate change partway through the year.
