The formula
Total tax = sum of (income in each state bracket × rate) + (if NYC resident) sum of (income in each city bracket × rate)
How it works
It applies New York State's progressive brackets to your income and, if you are a New York City resident, adds the city's own progressive resident tax.

- Adding the New York City resident tax
- Checking take-home income in New York

What the New York income tax calculator does
The calculator estimates New York State income tax on your earnings and, for city residents, the New York City resident tax. It applies the state's progressive brackets for your filing status and, when you tick the resident box, adds the city's own progressive schedule. The city tax can add several percentage points, so the combined figure matters when budgeting, comparing job offers or deciding whether to live inside or outside the city.
New York State income tax
Income is divided into bands, each taxed at its own rate, from 4% to a top rate of 10.9% on the highest incomes. Moving into a higher bracket raises the rate only on the income above that threshold, so your take-home pay always rises with your income.
Single and married-filing-jointly filers have different bracket widths, so the same income can be taxed differently depending on your status. For high earners, New York also has upper brackets that phase in additional tax, though most residents fall in the lower and middle bands.
The New York City resident tax
New York City is one of the few US cities with its own resident income tax. If you live in any of the five boroughs, it applies to the same income as the state tax, with progressive rates from about 3.08% to just under 3.9%. Tick the resident box to add it.
The city tax is a large part of why New York City residents pay some of the highest combined income tax rates in the country. A city resident on a middle-class salary can pay noticeably more than someone with the same income in Westchester, Long Island or New Jersey. Residents of the rest of the state, including the suburbs, do not pay it.
How the calculation works
- It takes the income you enter, adds any additional taxable income and subtracts pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or HSA contributions.
- It applies the state's progressive brackets for your filing status.
- For New York City residents, it applies the city's resident brackets to the same base.
- It adds the two for your total New York tax and subtracts that from your income for the after-tax amount.
The output shows the state and city tax separately, then your total tax, effective rate and after-tax income, annual and monthly.
Understanding your effective rate
Your effective rate is the share of your income that goes to New York tax, and it is lower than your top marginal rate. For a city resident it includes both state and city tax, so it is noticeably higher than the state figure alone. It is a useful way to compare the same salary inside and outside the city.
What you need to enter
Enter your gross annual income, your filing status and whether you live in New York City. If your income varies through the year, enter your expected annual total, since the brackets apply to the full year. The advanced options let you add other taxable income and pre-tax deductions.
Reading your result and limits
The result follows the state and city tax schedules but does not model every New York credit, deduction or exemption, such as the household credit or the earned income credit, so your actual tax may be lower. Confirm the details with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance or a qualified tax professional, and recalculate when your income, filing status or residence changes.
