The formula
Next bracket = lowest bracket threshold above your income (federal or provincial)
How it works
It locates the federal and provincial bracket for your income, reports each rate and the combined marginal rate, and finds the nearest threshold above your income.
Where it is used
- Identifying your federal and provincial tax brackets
- Seeing how much room is left before the next bracket
- Understanding how progressive brackets stack
Worked example
At CA$90,000.00, you are in the … federal band and the … provincial band, a combined marginal rate of …, with … of room before the next bracket.
What the tax bracket calculator does
The calculator shows where your income sits in Canada’s tax structure: your federal bracket, your provincial or territorial bracket, the combined marginal rate and where the next bracket begins.
Many people believe crossing into a higher bracket taxes all their income at the higher rate, and worry a small raise could leave them worse off. Only the income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate, and the calculator shows how much room you have before the next step.
Federal and provincial brackets
The federal brackets apply everywhere; each province and territory adds its own with different thresholds and rates. The calculator finds the federal band containing your income, then the provincial band, and adds their rates for the combined marginal rate on your next dollar.
The next bracket and how far away it is
Federal and provincial thresholds rarely coincide, so your rate next rises at whichever comes first. The calculator reports that income level and the gap to it. The gap helps when planning a bonus, extra hours or the timing of income between years, and it shows how a deduction that brings income below a threshold keeps more of it in the lower band.
A worked example
On $90,000 in Ontario, your income is in the second federal band at 20.5% and the second Ontario band at 9.15%, a combined marginal rate of 29.65%. The next federal threshold is $117,045 and the next Ontario threshold $107,785, so the next bracket begins at $107,785, $17,785 away. The bar chart breaks your federal tax down band by band.
A $10,000 raise to $100,000 is still below $107,785, so every dollar of it is taxed at 29.65%. Only income above $107,785 would be taxed at the higher Ontario rate, and only that part.
Reading your result
The combined marginal rate tells you what extra income is worth; the gap shows your headroom at current rates. Brackets describe rates, not your total bill. For the tax you owe or your average rate, use an income tax calculator.
How brackets change from year to year
The federal government and most provinces index their thresholds to inflation each year, so the income at which each rate begins rises. Rates change less often, but governments do adjust them, and occasionally add or remove a band. Your bracket next year may differ even if your pay does not, so recheck at the start of each tax year. The calculator uses current thresholds.
Provincial and territorial differences
The territories tend to have fewer bands at lower rates, several provinces have four or five brackets, British Columbia has seven and Newfoundland and Labrador eight, and Ontario adds a surtax on provincial tax that this bracket view does not include. Quebec sets its own brackets and collects provincial tax on a separate return. Provincial tax follows where you live on December 31.
Forms and common misunderstandings
Federal tax is calculated on the T1 return and provincial tax on Form 428, such as ON428 for Ontario; Quebec residents file the TP-1 with Revenu Québec. Besides the belief that crossing a threshold raises the rate on all income, people often confuse the marginal rate, which applies to your next dollar, with the average rate, total tax divided by income, which is lower.
Assumptions and limits
The calculator places your income in the current federal and provincial brackets and reports the statutory rates. It does not add Ontario’s surtax, calculated on provincial tax rather than income, or account for credits and benefit clawbacks that change the effective rate on some income ranges. Revisit it at the start of each tax year or when your income changes.
